NBR officer abduction: driver, associate sent to jail

A court in Dhaka has sent the former car driver of female National Board of Revenue officer Masuma Khatun and his associate to jail in a case over her abduction.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider passed the order to send driver Masud and his associate Abdul Jalil alias Panu to jail on Tuesday after police had prayed to confine them in jail until the investigation ends.

Earlier on Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan granted police a day to interrogate them after police had produced them before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.

On that day, the court ordered to confine another accused Hafiz in prison until the completion of the case probe following a police plea.

Earlier, Masuma Khatun, joint commissioner of Tax Zone-2 in Dhaka, was abducted from Moghbazar area in the capital on August 17 night and tortured, and she managed to escape around 18 hours after her abduction.

Later, she filed an abduction case against four people with Ramna Police Station.

RAB arrested three accused - Masud, 42, Abdul Jalil alias Panu, 48, and Hafiz alias Shahni, 48 - early hours of Saturday (August 26).

Masud, the main accused and former car driver of the NBR officer, was sacked on August 1 for personal disciplinary reasons.

However, RAB on Saturday said her former husband Harun Or Rashid had planned her abduction from his anger toward her.

The elite force said he involved her former car driver Masud in his plan and later, made him and six others abduct her.
