Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Tuesday said that the police have been performing duty professionally and facing challenges on legal frame.
“As per the law, police perform their duties for maintaining law and order which is their legal responsibility,” the IGP told the journalists after visiting the ailing Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Police Station Ajay Chandra Dev at the National Institute of Ophthalmology at Agargaon in Dhaka.
The IGP said the OC of Habiganj Police Station received serious injuries in his eyes by stones thrown by BNP activists while performing duty for maintaining law and order on August 19, 2023.
Denying BNP leaders’ statement about police, Abdullah Al Mamun said the police do not make political statements but perform their duties to protect the lives and properties of the people and maintain law and order.
Replying to a question, he said, “In my view, no political statement has been made from the police. I perform my duties according to the law and the regulations.”
The IGP said that Bangladesh Police will continue to perform their best duties for the better treatment of the injured OC.
“If any member of the police is injured on law and order issues in the future, we will try our best to provide him the best possible treatment,” he added.
Replying to another question, Mamun said, “It is my responsibility to maintain law and order and I have to face the challenges that will come in front of me. I am entrusted with the responsibility of applying that law professionally and our members never fail to fulfill this duty”.
“I am bound to do the legal duty. We have the training, necessary logistics, equipment and capabilities to carry out these duties,” the IGP added.
