Eggs to be imported if necessary to control price hike: Tipu

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Sunday said the government would import eggs if the price of the low-cost source of protein keeps an upward trend.

"Import of eggs will be allowed in coordination with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock if the price of eggs cannot be controlled," he said while talking to reporters after inaugurating the sales of products, including rice among one crore family card-holders belonging to low-income groups under an initiative of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), said a press release.

The state-run agency organised the event at Mohammadpur Town Hall in the city.

Tipu said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is responsible for determining the price of eggs in the market and on the basis of that raids are carried out through the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection to stabilise the egg market given its recent fluctuations.

Questioned about the procurement of sugar, Tipu Munshi mentioned about the multifaceted approach taken by the ministry and said that sugar is sourced both internationally and locally to meet demand.

"Delays in shipment arrivals and clearance procedures at the port have prompted this dual approach to ensure a consistent supply for the nation," he added.
