The secondary-level teachers under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system started a fast unto death programme on Tuesday demanding nationalisation of their jobs.
Wearing burial shrouds, they started the programme in front of National Press Club in the capital at 10am.
The teachers, under the banner of the Bangladesh Teachers’ Association, continued their sit-in protest there since July 11 demanding an increase in their pay scale to the level of government school teachers.
The teachers demand Tk 16,000 as entry-level basic salary, Tk 1,500 medical allowance, 100 per cent of the basic salary as festival allowance, and 45 per cent of the basic salary as house rent.
The teachers’ leaders said they have started fast unto death programme as they failed to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
