AL nominates Sajjadul Hasan for by-polls to Netrokona-4

The ruling Awami League (AL) has nominated Sajjadul Hasan, former Senior Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, as its candidate for by-polls to Netrokona-4 constituency.   

The decision was taken at a meeting of party’s Parliamentary Nomination Board held at Ganabhaban with AL president Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Friday night.

AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader confirmed the matter to the journalists. 

Sajjadul’s elder brother Obaidul Hasan is the Justice of Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. 

The by-election to the Netrokona-4 constituency that fell vacant following the death of ruling AL lawmaker Rebecca Momin will be held on September 2.

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Md Jahangir Alam announced the schedule of the by-election at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on July 16.

As per the schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is July 24 while the date for scrutinising those is July 25 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is July 31.

This by-polls will be held with ballot papers, the EC said. 

Rebecca Momin died while undergoing treatment at Square Hospitals in the capital on July 11.

The EC has a constitutional obligation to complete the by-polls within 90 days after it fell vacant.
