UN expresses concern over attack on Hero Alam

The United Nations in Bangladesh has expressed concern over the attack on Dhaka-17 by-polls independent candidate Ashraful Hossain Alam, popularly known as Hero Alam.

“The @UNinBangladesh is concerned over the attack on independent MP candidate Ashraful Alam during the Dhaka-17 by-poll. The fundamental human right of everyone to participate in elections without violence should be guaranteed and protected,” UN resident coordinator in Dhaka, Gwyn Lewis, tweeted on Tuesday.

On Monday afternoon, Hero Alam came under the attack when he went to visit Banani Bidyaniketon School and College polling centre. Later, he was taken to Better Life Hospital in the capital’s Rampura.

Voting to the Dhaka-17 by-election was held on Monday.

Awami League-nominated candidate Mohammad Ali Arafat won the election bagging 28,816 votes.

Arafat’s nearest rival independent candidate Hero Alam secured 5,609 votes.
