SC clears way to set up cattle market in Aftabnagar

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) has cleared the way for setting up a sacrificial cattle market in the capital’s Aftabnagar.

A bench of the Appellate Division led by Justice Obaidul Hasan on Wednesday passed the order staying a High Court (HC) verdict that postponed the decision to set up the cattle market in the area. 

Earlier on May 22, the HC postponed the decision to set up a cattle market in Aftabnagar for a week. At the same time, the court issued a ruling regarding the cancellation of the lease.

The HC bench comprising of Justice KM Kamrul Quader and Justice Mohammad Shawkat Ali Chowdhury gave this order after hearing a writ petition filed in public interest.

On May 15, the writ was filed in the High Court seeking direction not to set up a cattle market in the area on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha. Lawyer Md Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ in public interest demanding environmental protection.

In the writ, the secretary of Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, Dhaka North City Corporation, chief land officer of Dhaka North City, chairman of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (RAJUK), Eastern Housing and Dhaka district commissioners were made defendants.
