The Awami League has nominated Mohammad Ali Arafat (Mohammad A Arafat), a member of its Central Working Committee, as the ruling party’s candidate for Dhaka-17 by-polls.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Nomination Board held at Gonobhaban on Friday.
A source from AL confirmed the matter to Jago News.
Earlier, the party sold nomination forms for the by-polls from June 3 to June 6. A total of 22 candidates collected the nomination papers.
The by-election to the Dhaka-17 constituency that fell vacant following the death of ruling AL lawmaker and noted film actor Akbar Hossain Pathan Farooque will be held on July 17.
According to the election schedule, the last date for submitting nomination papers is June 15, while the date for scrutinising nomination papers is June 18, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 25.
Legendary actor and parliamentary member Farooque died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on May 15.
