HC upholds jail sentences of Tuku, Aman in graft cases

The High Court has upheld the lower court verdicts that had given different jail terms to BNP leaders Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Aman Ullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman in separate graft cases.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khijir Hayat on Tuesday passed the order after rejecting their appeal petitions filed against the lower court verdicts.

The HC also ordered them to surrender before the lower court within two weeks after getting the copies of the judgment.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a graft case against Tuku with Mohammadpur Police Station on March 21, 2007 on charges of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 4.96 crore and concealing information about it.

A Special Judges Court-5 of Dhaka on November 15, 2007 jailed Tuku for nine years as the corruption charges were proved against him.

Tuku filed an appeal with the HC in December, 2007 challenging the lower court verdict.

The HC on June 16, 2011 acquitted Tuku of the corruption charges.

Following an appeal filed by the ACC, the Appellate Division on January 21, 2014 cancelled the HC verdict and asked it to hold a fresh hearing.

On the other hand, the ACC filed a graft case with Kafrul Thana in the capital on March 6 in 2007.

On June 21, 2007, the Special Judge's Court sentenced Aman to 13 years imprisonment for amassing illegal wealth beyond his known income source.

His wife, being an accomplice in the case, was awarded with three years of imprisonment.

ACC filed an appeal as a High Court bench acquitted them from the corruption charges on August 16, 2010.

Later on May 26, 2014, the High Court abolished the verdict and ordered to rehear the case.
