Lightning strikes kill 5 in Narsingdi

Five people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes in Raipura, Monohardi and Shibpur upazilas of Narsingdi and in the district town on Tuesday.

In Raipura, three boys received injuries as thunderbolts struck them at Gopinathpur under Nilakkha union around 2 pm.

Later, they were rushed to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared one dead.

The deceased was identified as Jabed Mia, 12, son of Ismail, a resident of Gopinathpur village. 

Nilakkha union parishad chairman advocate Aktaruzzaman Shamim said the incident took place when the boys were playing football in a field near their home during rain.

Earlier this morning, a woman died after being struck by lightning at Fakirer Char village under Shrinagar union in the upazila.

Local UP member Jalal Uddin said thunderbolts hit the woman, Nahar, 45, wife of Momraz Mia, a resident of the village, when she went to a field near their house to bring straw.

In Monohardi, a young man sustained injuries after being struck by thunderbolts in Patardia village under Daulatpur union around 2 pm.

He was rushed Monohardi Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

The deceased was identified as Rayhan Mia, 25, son of late Badal Mia, a resident of the village.

Daulatpur union parishad chairman Sharif Mahmud Khan Bahalul confirmed the matter.

In Shibpur, a youth was injured in lightning strikes in South Sadarchar village this morning when he was working in a field.

Later, injured Khokan Mia, 30, son of Khorshed Mia, a resident of the village, was taken to Palash Upazila Health Complex where he was declared dead.

The facility on-duty physician Niaz Morshed said farmer Khokan was brought dead here. 

In the district town, a boy died after being struck by thunderbolts in Pashchimkandapara colony during bathing in a pond. 

The deceased was identified as Shuptaker, 14, son of Sukurmar Roy of the colony.
