Commerce ministry's letter to allow onion import

The Commerce Ministry has sent a letter to the Agriculture Ministry to take measures to give import permit (IP) for onions amid a rise in prices of the kitchen item.

The letter, recently signed by the ministry's Joint Controller Shamima Akter, said Bangladesh Trading Corporation (TCB) data showed that onion is currently being sold at Tk 70-80 per kg.

It is needed to take initiatives to keep the onion market normal by increasing its supply, the letter read.

In this situation, it is requested by direction to consider giving import permit for onion at a limited scale on an emergency basis to keep the market stable, according to the letter.
