Can sulphates in shampoo cause hair fall?

From the frequency of shampooing hair to the kind of shampoo, we all must have come across the various dos and don’ts of using shampoos. While it may be difficult to fish out information, making an informed choice can benefit your hair and help them make it strong and beautiful.

Dr Jaishree Sharad, India's leading dermatologist, shared some of the most common myths related to shampoo.

Changing shampoos will prevent hair fall

You must have heard that changing shampoo can prevent hair fall. However, as per the expert, this is not true but only a myth. “Shampoos are meant to cleanse your scalp. You should change your shampoo according to the scalp condition as in dry or greasy and also the climate. However, changing shampoos will not control hair fall,” she said.

Daily shampoo will cause hair fall

We all have heard this and it is the reason why many of us avoid shampooing our hair daily. But the expert does not think so. “If your scalp is exposed to pollution, dirt, or if sweat gets accumulated on your scalp, you need to shampoo your hair daily to keep your hair clean,” wrote Dr Jaishree.

Sulphate shampoos are bad for hair

The expert revealed that it is simply a myth as sulphate is a cleansing agent which helps to clean the dirt and oil from the scalp. “Depending upon your hair type shampoo should be chosen. Sulphate in shampoo may not suit certain hair types. So, consult your dermatologist before using it,” she said.

Shampoo should be applied to hair strands

You too must have heard this but the truth is you must apply shampoo to your scalp. “Shampoo should be applied on the scalp rather than your hair strands as it is meant to get rid of dirt, grime, sweat salts, oil and dead skin build-up” informed Dr Jaishree.
