Writ against presidential election dismissed, lawyer fined Tk 1 lakh

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court order that rejected a writ petition filed challenging the legality of the process of electing Mohammed Shahabuddin as President of the country.

An eight-member bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on Thursday passed the order after rejecting a leave to appeal filed against the HC order.

The court fined lawyer MA Aziz Khan Tk one lakh for wasting its time by filing a pointless petition.

On February 13, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification declaring Mohammad Shahbuddin as the country’s 22nd President.

On March 7, the Supreme Court lawyer Aziz Khan filed the writ petition challenging the legality of the process of the election of Mohammad Shahabuddin as President of Bangladesh.

The lawyer also challenged the issuance of the gazette notification that declared Shahabuddin as President and sought a stay order on the operation of the notification.

On March 15, the HC bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Iqbal rejected the writ petition. Later, the lawyer filed a leave to appeal against the HC order.
