Two workers were killed and 17 others injured when a pickup lost control and fell into a roadside ditch on Satkhira-Khulna highway at Kumira Bazar in Satkhira early Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Sumon Hossain, 35, son of Montu Miah of Kashimari village in Shyamnagar upazila of the district and Abul Hossain, 46, son of late Omor Ali of Joynagar village of the same upazila.
Eight of the injured were identified as Yeasin Ali, 19, son of Hazrat Ali of Kashimari village in Shyamnagar upazila, Shukur Ali, 50, son of Nesar Ali of Dhulihar village in Satkhira Sadar upazila, Imon Hossain, 19, son of Abdul Ali of Kashempur village, Tapos Kumar Das, 40, Shahidul Islam, 35, Mamun Hossain, 23, Md Shahin, 21 and Farida Begum, 50.
Some of the injured were sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital and the rest to Satkhira Medical College Hospital.
Injured Tapos said they went to Shariatpur from Satkhira for harvesting paddy and were returning by a pickup with paddy received as wages on Monday night. The helper of the pickup was driving the vehicle instead of the driver. When the pickup reached near Kumira Bazar around 4:45am today, it lost control and fell into the ditch, leaving 21 injured.
He also said being informed fire service members recovered us and brought to the sadar hospital where Sumon and Abul died.
Biswajit Kumar Adhikari, Inspector (investigation) Patkelghata Police Station, confirmed the matter to Jago News.
