Gas supply from two Maheshkhali LNG terminals suspended

Gas supply from two floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Maheshkhali remained suspended from 11 pm on Friday due to the approaching cyclonic storm 'Mocha'.

Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry issued a press release in this regard today saying gas supply will be disrupted in Chattogram and Cumilla.

Gas supply will resume within the quickest possible time considering the cyclone situation, it said.

Gas-powered power plants in Chattogram, Meghnaghat, Haripur and Siddhirganj areas may remain closed or those may operate partially.

In a program today, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that there is a possibility of electrocution if water accumulates during the cyclone.

"So, operation of electricity and gas has to be shut down at that time," she said.

This move (shutdown of gas and electricity) would create temporary sufferings but it would save the lives of people, she added.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid regretted the temporary inconvenience and said gas and power supply in the region will be made normal very soon.

He requested all that if anyone finds any torn electric cable, he or she should inform the nearby power distribution office without touching it.

The very severe cyclonic storm 'Mocha' is likely to cross Cox's Bazar-Myanmar's north coast by 6 pm on May 14 (Sunday), said the special bulletin of the Met Office.

Cox's Bazar and adjoining coastal areas will experience the peripheral effect of the very severe cyclonic storm by this evening.
