Sugar price reaches record high of Tk 140

The price of sugar has reached a record high of Tk 140 per kilogram amid a rise in commodity prices.

Visiting different markets of capital Dhaka on Wednesday, it was seen that most shops had no packaged sugar.

However, loose sugar was being sold at Tk 135 to Tk 140 per kg which was Tk 120 to Tk 125 a kg in the last week.

Traders alleged that there was no supply of sugar since Eid-ul-Fitr.

Importers claimed sugar prices witnessed a record high in the international market that affected the domestic one.

Amid this, they said they sought an opinion from the government about whether they will import sugar at a high price.

According to statistics from the state-owned Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, sugar prices increased to 15 percent in a month and rose to more than 62 percent in a year.

Wholesale traders said some dealers sell sugar at high price but do not provide receipts.
