The Chamber Judge has stayed the High Court (HC) verdict that granted bail to Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza, which collapsed and killed 1,136 people in 2013, in a murder case.
Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice Abu Jafor Siddique on Sunday stayed the bail till May 8 following a petition filed by the state challenging the HC verdict.
Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi told Jago News that Sohel will not be able to get released following the order of the Chamber Judge.
Earlier on April 6, Sohel Rana was granted bail by the High Court in the murder case.
The HC bench of Justice Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Shahed Nuruddin passed the order declaring appropriate the rule on his bail.
After the bail order, his lawyer said, there is no bar to his release.
Rana Plaza, a multi-storey building in Savar on the outskirts of Dhaka, collapsed on April 24 in 2013, leaving 1,136 garment workers dead and injuring around 2,000. Besides, 2,438 laborers were rescued from the rubble.
Then Savar Police Station sub-inspector Wali Ashraf filed a case in this connection bringing allegations of negligence and flaw in the construction of the building.
Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana and many others were named in the lawsuit.
On April 26 of 2015, Bijoykrishna Kar, the assistant superintendent of the Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID), submitted a charges sheet against 41 accused.
On April 18 of 2016, Dhaka District and Session Judge SM Kuddus Zaman framed charges against them.
