The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has stayed a High Court order that granted the bail to Regent Group and Regent Hospital Chairman Md Sahed, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in an arms case.
An Appellate Division bench led by Justice Md Nuruzzaman on Tuesday passed the order after disposing of a leave-to-appeal petition filed by the state against the HC order.
Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi appeared on behalf of the state in the court while senior lawyer S M Shahjahan stood for Sahed.
Sahed was granted bail by the High Court on June 7, 2022. The chamber judge court stayed the bail following a petition by the state on June 12. Later, the state filed a leave to appeal.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge on September 28, 2020 sentenced Sahed to life for possessing a pistol with bullets which was seized by the Detective Branch of police in a drive on July 19, 2020.
Sahed was arrested on July 15, 2020 from Satkhira when he was trying to flee the country.
On July 19, the DB conducted a special drive with Sahed and recovered a pistol, some bullet, a magazine, 10 bottles of phensedyl, and five bottles of liquor from an abandoned car on Sonargaon Janapath Road in Uttara.
Later, the detectives filed two cases with Uttara West police station under Narcotics Control Act and Arms Act.
Law enforcers raided Mirpur and Uttara branches of Regent Hospital on July 6 on charge of issuing fake Covid-19 certificates and charging the admitted patients exorbitant fees.
The Regent Group head office along with both the hospitals were sealed off and 16 people, including the chairman, were sued on charge of issuing fake coronavirus test reports.
