Students-traders clash: RU suspends classes, exams for 2 days

Rajshahi University (RU) authority has suspended all classes and examinations for Sunday and Monday after a clash ensued between the students and local traders at Binodpur Bazar area adjacent to the university campus.  

The classes and examinations will resume from Tuesday. 

The university administration suspended the academic activities for two days in an emergency notice showing an unavoidable reason on Saturday night. 

Earlier on Saturday evening, 84 people were injured after a group of RU students clashed with local traders at Binodpur Bazar area.

Some students were critically injured in police firing. Of them, one student named Md Rakib is undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). 

Sub Inspector Mukul Hossain, In-charge of RMCH police box, confirmed the matter to Jago News.

Witnesses said, Mohammad, a student of Sociology department of RU under the academic session of 2017-18, locked into an altercation with the bus driver Shariful and his helper Ripon on the way to Rajshahi from Bogura over sitting on a seat.

When the bus reached Binodpur Bazar, they were locked in an argument again. Then, a local trader favoured the bus staffers and at one point he locked in a scuffle with the student.

Hearing the news, RU unit Chhatra League president Golam Kibria went to the spot. At that time local traders vandalized his motorcycle which led to the clash.
