BNP won't take part in polls if govt doesn't quit: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said his party will not participate in the parliamentary elections if the Awami League-led government does not step down.

"BNP will take part in the elections if the current government resigns, dissolves parliament, forms a new election commission and establish a caretaker government, otherwise not," he said.

He said this at a human chain in front of BNP's Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka on Saturday.

BNP formed human chains in all organizational metropolitan cities and districts across the country today to protest the commodity prices hike and press home their 10-point demand, including the resignation of the current government and the unconditional release of the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Saying Awami League has the ambition to stay in power till 2041 and for this, it wants to hold the 2024 election through a 'blue print', Mirza Fakhrul vowed, "But BNP will not join any election under Sheikh Hasina-led government."
