Gulistan blast: 1 more body recovered, death toll reaches 22

The death toll from the explosion at the seven-storey building in the capital’s Gulistan rose to 22 as one more dead body was recovered on Thursday.

The body was retrieved from the ground floor of the building around 12:30pm, said Fire Service and Civil Defence Directorate.

Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. 

Earlier, one victim named Md Musa, 45, died while undergoing treatment at high dependency unit of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNBPS) around 10:30pm on Wednesday. 

A doctor of the SHNBPS, said Musa suffered 98% burn injuries. His windpipe was burnt in the explosion. 

Md Bachchu Miah, In-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police camp, confirmed the death to Jago News. 

However, Dhaka Metropolitan DB Police took some people including the building owner over the explosion incident. 

“They are being interrogated,” said Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid.

On Tuesday afternoon, 18 people died after the explosion occurred on the ground floor of a seven-storey building at Siddique Bazar. Later, firefighters recovered two dead bodies from the spot on Wednesday. 

More than fifty people, who were injured in the explosion, are undergoing treatment at DMCH. Of them, some are in critical condition.
