Law, justice and parliamentary affairs minister Anisul Huq has said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will not be able to take part in the next parliamentary election. But whether she will do politics or not that is her personal matter. The government will not interfere there (political activity).
The minister said this on Sunday after inaugurating the orientation course for the newly appointed assistant judges at Judicial Administration and Training Institute in the capital.
He said, it is stated in the constitution that any person sentenced to two years of imprisonment shall not be eligible to participate in the election.
Khaleda Zia was convicted in two graft cases and taken to jail 5 years ago. In April 2020, in the light of the Covid pandemic, the government granted a request from her family for a conditional temporary release from jail for “humanitarian reasons”.
She has since stayed at her Gulshan home under the care of her personal doctors and has had limited interaction with others.
