Shahabuddin elected President unopposed, gazette issued

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday declared ruling Awami League candidate Md Shahabuddin elected unopposed as president of the country.

As no other candidate submitted nomination paper to contest the presidential race, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal made the announcement. 

A gazette notification singed by EC Secretary Jahangir Alam was issued in this regard.

Earlier on Sunday, a team of the Awami League along with Shahabuddin led by the party General Secretary Obaidul Quader went to the CEC’s office in the capital and submitted his nomination paper.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finalized his name for the presidential polls.

Shahabuddin, also a freedom fighter, is a former Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). His wife Dr Rebeka Sultana is a former Joint Secretary.

Born in Pabna in 1949, he served as Pabna district Chhatra League President. He joined Civil Service in 1982. He went on retirement as district and session judge in 2006.  

It is mentionable that, incumbent President M Abdul Hamid assumed office on April 24, 2018. Accordingly, his five-year tenure will end on April 23, 2023.
