AL nominates Shahabuddin as presidential candidate

Ruling Awami League (AL) has nominated former district and session judge and the party advisory council member Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu as its candidate to contest the 22nd presidential election.

A team of the AL along with Shahabuddin led by the party General Secretary Obaidul Quader went to the Chief Election Commissioner’s office in the capital and submitted his nomination papers on Sunday.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina finalized his name for the presidential polls.

Shahabuddin, also a freedom fighter, is a former Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). His wife Dr Rebeka Sultana is a former Joint Secretary.

Born in Pabna, he served as Pabna district Chhatra League President. He joined Civil Service in 1982. He went on retirement as district and session judge in 2006.

According to the country’s Constitution, members of parliament are voters in the presidential election.

AL has the absolute majority in the current parliament.

In that case, there is no possibility of any party other than the AL to give a candidate to the presidential polls.

If there is one candidate for the presidency, the election will not require a meeting or voting in parliament.

However, aspirants for the presidential election will have to submit their nomination papers to CEC office till 4pm today.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on February 13 from 10 am, while nomination papers can be withdrawn till 4pm on February 14.

On February 19, the presidential election will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) complex.

The President may hold office for five years from the date of assumption of office.

Incumbent President M Abdul Hamid assumed office on April 24, 2018. Accordingly, his five-year tenure will end on April 23, 2023.
