45 hurt in Jamalpur AL-BNP clash, 6 held

At least 45 people were injured in a clash between local Awami League and BNP men in Sadar upazila of Jamalpur on Saturday afternoon.

Police detained six people, including a union BNP leader, over the incident.

Local and police sources said Titpalla union Awami League, and the union BNP were separately holding a peace rally and a march program at Kamalkhan Bazar this afternoon.

At one stage, a scuffle took place between leaders and activists of both parties that turned into a clash and a chase and counter-chase.

Later, police went to the spot and opened fire and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Titpalla union AL general secretary Daulatuzzaman said three people, including himself, were injured in a sudden attack by BNP leaders and activists on AL's peace rally.

But the district unit BNP general secretary advocate Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun said Awami League attacked them with sticks.

Later, police fired bullets and threw tear shells, he said, adding that 35 BNP men received injuries in the incident.

Sadar Police Station officer in-charge Quazi Shahnewaz said police fired 34 rounds of bullets and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

They also detained six people, including Titpalli union general secretary, over the incident, he added.
