Five held over woman gang-rape in Dhaka

Police have arrested five people in a case of gang-rape of a woman who came to Dhaka from Jashore to meet her husband and children.

The arrestees are Billal Hossain, 25, Al Amin Hossain, 26, Sabuj, 26, Russel alias Molla Russel, 24, and Shafiqul Islam, 26.

They were apprehended from the capital's Gabtali, Demra and Bosila areas, and Bhola's Tazumuddin upazila on Saturday night.

HM Azimul Haque, the deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), informed about the arrests at his office on Sunday.

Describing the incident, he said the victim, 29, along with her husband and children would live in a rented house in Mohammadpur's Bosila area in the capital.

Keeping children to her husband, she went to village home in Jashore four months ago due to sickness. Amid this, her husband divorced her without informing anything.

On January 25, she came to Dhaka to meet her husband and children and know the reasons behind the divorce but their house owner informed that her husband and children left the house and he could not say anything about their whereabouts.

She looked for them in Bosila, Challishfeet, Future Housing, Garden City Housing, Swapnadhara Housing and adjacents till around 9 pm on the day but failed to locate them.

Around 9:30, she took a rickshaw from Bosila to go to Gabtali Bus Stand to return to Jashore.

But the rickshaw driver and his four cohorts took her to a tin shed house made for laborers in Bosila Future Town and gang-raped.

Being informed by locals, police, later, rescued the woman and sent her to the One Stop Crisis Center of Dhaka Medical College.

On January 27, a case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station in this connection.
