Electricity prices hiked at retail and wholesale levels

The government has increased the prices of electricity at retail and wholesale levels.

The new prices will be effective from Wednesday. 

Ministry of Power Energy and Mineral Resources issued a gazette notification in this regard on Monday.

The retail price of electricity has been increased by 5 per cent. The price will be increased from Tk 6.20 to Tk 8.10 per unit at the wholesale level. 

This is the second time the government used its newly-granted authority to adjust the price of electricity without a public hearing by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC). 

On Sunday (29 January), the BERC (Amendment) Bill 2023 was passed in the parliament, paving the way for the government to adjust the prices of gas and electricity without a public hearing.

Earlier on January 12, the government hiked the retail price of electricity by 5 per cent per unit on average.
