4 more devotees die at Ijtema ground

Four more devotees died at the Ijtema venue on the bank of Turag River at Tongi in Gazipur on Friday.

So far, five devotees have died at the Ijtema venue during the second phase of the global congregation.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Hannan, 45, son of Abdul Jabbar of East Jurain area in Dhaka, Md Borhan, 48 of Bangabazar area in Gulistan, Abdul Hamid Mondol, 55, son of Shukkur Mondol of Gaibandha and Mofijul Islam, 54, son of Abdul Alim of Savar. 

Mohammad Abu Sayem, Media Coordinator of the Ijtema, said Hannan went unconscious and died during Isha prayer on Friday. Borhan died of heart attack while Mondol and Islam died due to old age complications.

However, the second phase of Bishwa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims after Hajj, began on the bank of Turag River in Gazipur’s Tongi on Friday.

The congregation started with 'Aam Bayan' (general sermons) by noted Islamic scholars after Fazr prayers.

The first phase of Biswa Ijtema was held at the same venue on 13-15 January.
