US Asst Sec of State arrives

The United States Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu arrived in Dhaka on Saturday evening on a two-day visit to strengthen bilateral relationship and expanding economic engagement between Dhaka and Washington.

Foreign Ministry’s Director General of Americas wing Nayem Uddin Ahmed received Lu at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

“Assistant Secretary Lu will meet with senior Bangladeshi officials to discuss strengthening our bilateral relationship,” the US embassy here tweeted after Lu’s arrival.

The Assistant secretary of state is likely to make a courtesy call with foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and hold a bilateral meeting with foreign secretary Masud bin Momen, foreign ministry’s sources said.

Lu arrived here from India after wrapping up his two-day visit in New Delhi.

Earlier this morning, while asked by the reporters, foreign minister Momen said Dhaka would request Washington to reconsider the sanctions imposed on elite force Rab and withdraw the sanctions considering its positive role in the country.

"We will raise our issues. They will raise their issues,” he said regarding tomorrow’s meeting with US assistant secretary of state.

On Friday, Momen said, it is obvious that Bangladesh and the US do enjoy good relations as both the countries believe in same values and promote democracy and human rights.
