The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended providing student loans for hard-up university students which they will pay back after they finish studying and start working.
The commission made the recommendation in its 48th annual report handed over to President M Abdul Hamid on Thursday.
In the recommendation, UGC said university students in developed countries are provided student loans and there is a provision for paying back the debt after they complete their education and enter professional life.
Bangladesh also can introduce the student loan scheme by forming an endowment fund for poor students in higher study, the commission said.
