Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ridley Scott is set to come up with a sequel to his epic period action drama Gladiator (2000) and has approached Normal People star Paul Mescal for headlining the movie, according to the entertainment website Deadline.
David Scarpa has penned the script for the sequel. Janty Yates and Arthur Max will return as costume designer and production designer, respectively. No details, however, have been revealed regarding the plot of the new movie.
Scott will also co-produce the film along with Scott Free President Michael Pruss as well as Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment.
Headlined by Russell Crowe, Gladiator followed the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe) whose family members have been brutally murdered by the emperor's son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), in his quest for power. Maximus becomes a part of an entourage of gladiators and killing Commodus to avenge his family’s death is the single-point agenda on his mind.
Scott is currently busy working on his next film, which is based on the life of French military general Napoleon Bonaparte.
