Court rejects bail plea of Fakhrul, Abbas

A court in Dhaka has rejected the bail plea of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and its Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas in a case over the clash between police and BNP men at Nayapaltan in the capital.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain passed the order after a hearing.

Earlier on Wednesday, the lawyer of the two senior BNP leaders prayed bail for them in the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim and the court set Thursday for hearing.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafiuddin also denied bail to 224 leaders and activists of BNP, including Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas, and sent them to jail.

The detectives detained Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas from their respective homes in the capital early hours of December 8.

Later, they showed them arrested in a case filed with Paltan Police Station over the clash at Nayapaltan.

Allegations of inciting, planning and instructing barbaric attacks on police during the clash were brought against them in the lawsuit.

Earlier on December 7, police and BNP leaders-activists clashed in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office that left one dead and several injured.
