10-truck arms haul case: Death reference, appeal hearing on Jan 3

The hearing of the death reference and the appeal of the accused sentenced to death in the sensational 10-truck arms haul case has been fixed for January 3 next year.

A High Court bench of Justice Shahidul Alam and Justice Md Mostafijur Rahman fixed the date on Tuesday in view of the petition filed by the state lawyer Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ahmed. 

Nirmal Kumar Das, Assistant Attorney General, confirmed the matte to Jago News.

On April 1, 2004, a consignment of 10 trucks of arms and ammunition were seized from the CUFL jetty in Chattogram.

Two cases were filed over the incident with Karnafuli Police Station under the Arms Act and the Special Powers Act of 1974.

On January 30, 2014, the Chittagong Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1 handed down the death penalty to 14 people including former minister and Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Motiur Rahman Nizami and former BNP state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar for smuggling 10 truckloads of firearms in 2004.

The 14 convicts were also given life term imprisonment in another case filed for possessing illegal firearms.

Nizami was executed on May 11, 2016 after the Supreme Court upheld his death penalty for committing crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971.
