Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal on Thursday said postponing the by-polls to Gaibandha-5 constituency was not a thoughtless decision as the commission decided to postpone the election after observing it intensively.
"The decision to postpone Gaibandha-5 constituency by-polls was not an imprudent one. The Election Commission took the decision after thinking it thoroughly," he told a press conference at the Nirbachan Bhaban media centre at Agargaon in capital Dhaka.
Awal said the CEC cannot take any decision unilaterally rather the commission members take a concerted decision after discussing together.
The CEC said the polls have been postponed due to irregularities and unlawful acts. A committee has been formed to submit a report within seven working days after looking into the allegations of irregularities, he added.
Upon receiving the probe report, the next decision will be taken over the by-polls to Gaibandha-5 parliamentary seat, he said.
