3 dead, 45 rescued after Rohingya-carrying trawler sinks in Bay

Police on Tuesday noon recovered bodies of three teenage girls and rescued six more people alive from Shilkhali area of Baharchara in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar after a trawler carrying Rohingyas capsized in the Bay of Bengal while trying to cross the sea to illegally enter Malaysia on Tuesday.

Identities of them could not be known immediately.

Earlier, 39 people were rescued alive in the incident. Of them, four are Bangladeshis.

Nur Mohammad, In-charge of Baharchara Police Investigation Centre, confirmed the matter to Jago News.

He said, they recovered bodies of three teenage girls and rescued six more people alive. Earlier, 39 people were recovered alive.

He also said, the trawler started its journey from Kachchapia area in Moheshkhali upazila early today and later it sank in the Bay. At that time, many people tried to swim to reach ashore. 

“Most of the rescued people are Rohingyas. Some Bangladeshis are also among them. The process of identifying them is underway,” the police officer added.
