Shamsul Haque Tuku, a lawmaker from Pabna-1 constituency, has been elected as the deputy speaker of the National Parliament.
He was elected deputy speaker by a voice vote at the beginning of the 19th session of the 11th Parliament on Sunday.
Earlier, Chief Whip of Parliament Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury proposed his name as deputy speaker and Dhaka-2 MP Qamrul Islam supported the proposal.
Later, it was passed by a voice vote after Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury cast vote.
The deputy speaker-elect will be sworn in by President Abdul Hamid at his chamber in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 7 pm.
The post fell vacant after the demise of Deputy Speaker Md Fazle Rabbi Miah on July 22 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City of the United States.
Former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku is the current president of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of home affairs.
