Graft case: SC upholds bail cancellation of Samrat

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the order of the High Court (HC) that cancelled bail of suspended Juba League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in a case filed for amassing illegal wealth.

A three member bench of the Appellate Division led by Justice Md Nuruzzaman passed the order on Wednesday.

Advocate Md Khurshid Alam Khan, a lawyer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed the matter to Jago News.

Senior lawyer Munsurul Haque Chowdhury appeared on behalf of Samrat in the court while advocate Khurshid represented the ACC.

On May 24, Samrat filed a petition with the Appellate Division against the HC order that cancelled bail granted to him in the case.

On May 18, the HC cancelled the bail of Samrat in the case, granted by the lower court.

The HC also ordered the former Juba League leader to surrender before the lower court within seven days.

An HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukdar and Justice Kazi Md Ijharul Haque Akand passed the order after hearing on a petition filed by the ACC.

The ACC on May 16 appealed to the HC to cancel the bail of Samrat that was granted by a Dhaka court on May 11 in the case.

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Samrat at a house in a village in Cumilla’s Chauddagram upazila on October 6, 2019.

In a subsequent action, police raided his Kakrail office in the capital and recovered huge quantities of foreign liquor, guns and rare species of wildlife skins.

A mobile court sentenced Samrat to six months of jail term for possessing wildlife hides. A case was filed against him under the Arms and Drugs Act for possession of arms and drugs.

Later, the Criminal Investigation Department filed a case against him under the Money Laundering Act and the ACC filed a case alleging illegal acquisition of assets.
