Child dies in police firing during election violence

A two-year-old child has died in police firing during election violence in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon district. 

The deceased, Asha, was the daughter of Badsha, a resident of Middangi Bazar area in the upazila.

The incident took place at 3 No. Bhangbari polling station under Bachor union of the upazila on Wednesday.

Witnesses said a woman along with her child went to 3 No. Bhangbari polling center to know election results.

At that time, the supporters of member candidates Jalil and Faizul Islam chased and counter chased with each other centering election results.

To bring the situation under control, police fired bullets.

One of the bullets, however, hit the head of the child, leaving her dead on the spot.

Ranisankail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sohel Sultan Zulkarnain Kabir Steve confirmed the incident.

He said a child died in police firing. Police were forced to open fire as the situation went out of control. At that time, the accident happened, he added.
