Man who set himself on fire at National Press Club dies

A man, who tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire on the National Press Club premises on Monday afternoon, died early Tuesday.  

The deceased, Gazi Anis, former president of Kushtia district unit Chhatra League, breathed his last around 6:15am while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS).

Confirming the matter to Jago News, Dr Ayub Hossain, Resident Surgeon of the SHNIBPS, said Anis had 90% burns.

Mohammad Ali, who took Anis to the hospital, said that he (Anis) set himself on fire as he could not recover his money from Henolux Company. He invested Tk 1.26 crore in the company. He also held press conferences for several times in this regard. 

Anis’ elder brother Gazi Nazrul Islam said, my brother invested Tk 1.26 crore in the company. He had been trying to get the money for a long time.

Md Bachchu Miah, In-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said the dead body was kept at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy. The concerned police station was informed about the matter.
