Khaleda Zia hospitalized

BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been admitted to the Evercare Hospital at Bashundhara residential area in the capital early Saturday.

She left her Gulshan residence at 2:55am after falling sick and was admitted to the hospital under the supervision of Professor Dr Shahabuddin Talukder at 3:20am.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir and the party chairperson’s press wing member Shayrul Kabir Khan also went to the hospital with her.

Later, she was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of the hospital.

“A medical board will decide about the treatment of Khaleda Zia at 10:30am,” Mirza Fakhrul told journalists.

Khaleda, a 76-year-old former prime minister, has been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, kidney, lung and eye problems.

She was convicted in two graft cases and was taken to jail three years ago. In April 2020, in the beginning of Covid pandemic, the government granted a request from her family for a conditional temporary release from jail for “humanitarian reasons”.
