Ramna Batamul bomb blast: Death-row convict Mufti Shafiqul held

Mufti Shafiqul Islam, a death-row convict in the Ramna Batamul bomb explosion case, has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion members.

He was apprehended from Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj district on Thursday night, RAB legal and media wing director commander Khandaker Al Moin confirmed to Jago News.

Shafiqul, who also received life-term imprisonment in the 21 August grenade attack case, had long been in hiding, the elite force official added.

On April 14, 2021, two bombs exploded at Ramna Batamul in the capital of Dhaka during the Chhayanat's Bengali New Year celebration, leaving 10 people dead.

Later, Ramna Police Station lodged two cases under the Murder and Explosives Act in this connection, accusing 14 people, including Harkatul Jihad (Huji) top leader Mufti Hannan.

On June 23, 2014, Dhaka 2nd Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Ruhul Amin sentenced eight people, including Mufti Hannan and Shafiqul, to death and awarded six to life-term imprisonment.

On April 12, 2017, Mufti Hannan was executed for carrying out a bomb attack on former British High Commissioner in Bangladesh Anwar Chowdhury.
