Munshiganj teacher Hridoy Mondal granted bail

A court has granted bail to Hridoy Chandra Mondal, a science teacher of Rampur High School at Binodpur in Munshiganj, in a case allegedly for making derogatory remarks about the religion Islam.

Munshiganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Motaharat Akter Bhuiyan passed the order on Sunday noon.

On March 20, students of Mondal’s tenth-grade science class, recorded a class conversation regarding science and religion where he reportedly disrespected Islam.

On March 22, students demonstrated, joined by some locals, after submitting a memorandum to the head teacher against Hridoy.

Police then moved the protesters away and detained the teacher from his home. He was also suspended. Later the same day, he was formally arrested in the case filed by the school’s office assistant Md Asad.

Hridoy was produced in court the next day and he was denied bail and sent to jail.

Rights activists and legal experts stood by Hridoy, questioning the recording of the conversation, its circulation on social media, his arrest after the demonstration, and the denial of bail.

Several organizations demonstrated across Bangladesh demanding the release of Hridoy while people condemned his arrest on social media.
