2 children murdered in ‘pre-planned way’, mother arrested

Two children of Durgapur village at Ashuganj upazila in Brahmanbaria were murdered in ‘pre-planned way’. They didn’t die after consuming the Napa syrup. Mentioning this, the children’s father Ismail Hossen, a brick kiln worker, filed a case against his wife Lima Begum. Later, police arrested her.

The two children are Yachin Khan, 7 and Morsalin Khan.

Confirming the matter to Jago News, Azad Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ashuganj Police Station, on Thursday said further details regarding the incident will be disclosed at a press conference at 3pm.

Earlier, Lima Begum alleged that the children, who were suffering from high fever, died after they were given the Napa syrup, produced by Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

She said the children’s grandmother bought it from a local drug store named “Mayeen Uddin Pharmacy”. After consuming the syrup, the children’s health deteriorated and they were first taken to Upazila Health Complex and then to Zilla Sadar Hospital. Later, they were discharged from the hospital and died at their home on March 10.

On March 13, the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) formed a six-member probe committee to investigate the incident of the death of two children.

DGDA also directed all of its divisional and district officials to collect samples of a Napa syrup -- belonging to a certain batch number -- produced by Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd last December from the market and send those for lab test.
