Ex-Bangladesh envoy released from detention in Malaysia

Former Bangladesh high commissioner Mohamed Khairuzzaman has been released after he was detained in Malaysia on Feb 10.

His release was confirmed by his lawyer Ngeow Chow Ying when contacted via WhatsApp on Wednesday (Feb 16) evening (Malaysia local time).

Ngeow said he was released at 3.35pm from the Immigration Department depot headquarters in Putrajaya.

“He is home already and his release is unconditional.

On Feb 10, Home Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said that Mohamed Khairuzzaman’s arrest was carried out legally.

Mohamed Khairuzzaman, who has been living in Malaysia for years as a refugee, was detained at his home in Ampang on Feb 9.

On Tuesday (Feb 15), the High Court granted an interim stay on Malaysia’s order to deport Mohamed Khairuzzaman.
