Sylhet grenade attack: 2 HUJI leaders seek acquittal

Mufti Abdul Hannan and Shorif Shahedul Alam Bipul, leaders of Al Qaeda affiliate Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami (HUJI),  have filed a writ petition by seeking acquittal from a case filed over grenade attack on Anowar Hossain, the then British High Commissioner in Bangladesh in Sylhet in 2004.Shamsul Alam, lawyer of Hannan and Bipul submitted two appeals on behalf of them on Wednesday though this news unveiled on Thursday morning.Earlier, on February 11 in this year, a court convicted the duo and sentenced them to life term imprisonment in this case.On May 21, 2004, miscreants carried out a grenade attack on British High Commissioner, leaving two police men killed and at least 40 people injured including the High Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and other government officials.A case was filed on the day against unidentified people with Sadar Police Station. On June 7, 2007, police submitted charge sheet against Mufti Hannan, Bipul, Delowar and others.
