The government on Sunday published a gazette on the “Appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners Bill-2022”.
According to the law, President M Abdul Hamid can now form a search committee for appointing CEC and ECs for holding free and fair elections.
Earlier on Saturday, the President assented to the bill passed in the first session of 2022 of 11th Jatiya Sangsad (JS).
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq placed the bill in the House on January 23.
The cabinet approved the draft bill on January 17.
It is to be noted that, the tenure of the incumbent KM Nurul Huda led election commission will expire on Feb 14.
