Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Saturday urged the students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology to call off their fast-unto-death programme and sit in discussion to resolve the ongoing crisis.
"It is possible to resolve every problem through discussion..... We, whatever myself or anyone else on behalf of me, agree to sit in discussion (with students)," she said after a meeting with a delegate of the university teachers at her residence in the capital.
Earlier on Wednesday, a group of SUST students went on fast-unto-death demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed.
As many as 16 students, however, fell sick while observing the fasting as of today.
The protesting students said police charged batons, hurled sound grenades and rubber bullets on them in front of the VC and proctorial body, leaving more than 40 students injured.
"We no longer want such autocratic VC, proctor, and student welfare adviser. We have sent an open letter to President (M Abdul Hamid)," they said.
