The results of the fifth phase of the union parishad (UP) elections have been announced.
Asaduzzaman, joint secretary of the Election Commission, announced the results of 692 UPs out of 708 on Thursday.
According to the results, the independent candidates won in 346 UPs while Awami League-backed ones 341.
Besides, two candidates of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, two of Jatiya Party (JaPa), and one of Bangladesh Jatiya Party won in the polls.
The EC, however, declared 193 contenders elected unopposed before the elections.
The fifth phase elections of 708 union parishad were held on Wednesday. Later, voting was suspended in 13 UPs.
The voting in one was halted following a court order, one stopped by the EC and it did not publish results of voting in another UP.
It was learned that four political parties-backed candidates took part in the fifth phase UP elections but BNP boycotted.
