Suspended Dewanganj mayor arrested in Dhaka

Suspended Jamalpur’s Dewanganj Municipality mayor Shahnewaz Shahanshah, who assaulted a government officer at an event organized on the occasion of the Victory Day, has been arrested in Dhaka. 

Based on specific information, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive at the Hotel De Meridian in the capital and arrested him from there on Thursday morning. 

Some yaba pills, a bottle of phensedyl and cash money were recovered from his possession. 

Confirming the matter to Jago News, RAB’s Legal and Media Wing Assistant Director ASP A N M Imran Khan, said he (Shahnewaz) will be sent to Jamalpur. 

Earlier on Tuesday, the local government ministry suspended him temporarily from his post.  

According to the source, the mayor hurled abuses at Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md Meher Ullah, presenter of the event held on the Dewanganj Government High School premises, and also slapped him twice on December 16.

Later, Meher Ullah submitted a written complaint to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer in this regard. He also filed a case against the mayor with Dewanganj Police Station.
