Bangladesh has detected its first two cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant among two women cricketers who arrived from Zimbabwe recently.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque briefed the journalists about this after a meeting at Dhaka Shishu Hospital on Saturday.
It was learned that samples of the two women cricketers were tested upon their arrival and the results came out COVID-19 positive.
Later, they both were diagnosed with the new coronavirus variant in genome sequencing at the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research (IEDCR).
Omicron was first reported on Nov. 24 in southern Africa, and later, it sharply spread to different countries of the world.
